Info about HeartSafe's EMR Scholarships:

Recognizing that the BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) has great difficulty attracting and retaining trained Paramedics in the rural and isolated areas of the Province, HeartSafe EMS owner Paul Stone is pleased to offer the scholarships for Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) training.

Applicants/ students are expected, once they complete the EMR training, to apply for and do the required EMA Licensing practical and written exams at the EMR Level and then apply for employment with BCAS in their local areas. Any costs associated with the EMA Licensing exams are the responsibility of the student. Complete details on Licensing requirements are available through the EMA Licensing website and employment details for BCAS are available through their website BC Ambulance Service.

Aside from employment with BCAS there are opportunities for trained / licensed EMR students in the growing construction / oil and gas and mining industries in Northern BC, Alberta, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

Students who are successful in completing their EMR training with HeartSafe EMS are also eligible for priority availability for training spots in our upcoming Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) program.

Scholarship areas and details:

BC's Gulf Islands:

Paul Stone, long time (36 years) Paramedic with BCAS and HeartSafe EMS First Aid training’s owner recognizes that the Gulf Islands along with many other rural communities in BC sometimes have a major issue / problem staffing the Ambulance (or community Ambulance) for local responses. This is our attempt to help alleviate that situation. We have had major successes in training students to become Paramedics and we want to help the smaller communities by offering a solution.

We are prepared to offer per year for one student from each island to enroll free of cost into our OFA 3/ EMR program here in Victoria. The Scholarship does not include travel or living expenses.

Prospective applicants must be prepared to do the EMA Licensing exams once the course is completed and apply for employment with BC Ambulance Service after successfully completing the Licensing exams and then work on their home Island with BCAS.

We are wanting the prospective students to be chosen by the local community and specifically the health care society on each island so that the most appropriate candidate will be selected. Each Island can set their own criteria when it comes to selecting the student.
